Fungal nail

Fungal nail

Fungal nail infections (Onychomycosis) are easy to get and a nuisance to get rid of but it is very important that they are diagnosed quickly and treated affectively. Fungal infections are caused by organisms that grow on the nail plate which affect nail growth and the appearance of the nail. Fungal infections love hot, sweaty, dark places to grow and reproduce. It is vital that clean cotton socks are worn to limit the spread of infection.

One way to test for the type of fungus is for your podiatrist or doctor to do a nail scraping of the nail and send it to a lab for analysis.

SymptomsTreatment
  • white/yellow patch on the nail, spreading downward
  • thickened nail
  • rough texture
  • soft and crumbly
  • topical antifungal agent applied to the nail daily to fight the fungal infection
  • regular reduction of the nail

Problems such as athlete's foot can spread and infect the nails, causing a fungal infection in the nail. It is vital to treat all foot problems before they spread and cause more problems.
