Bunions

Bunions are one of the most common foot complaints of women. Bunions occur when the 1st toe deviates towards the smaller toes causing the bony prominence we see. Bunions can be inherited but also can be caused occur by wearing tight fitting shoes, specific activities, excessive over pronation, trauma or injury, excessive weight gain.

SymptomsTreatment
  • redness, swelling and pain over the bony prominence
  • increase of foot width
  • 'hammer toe' developing on the 2nd toe
  • insoles to correct over pronation
  • wide fitting shoes
  • apply ice and elevate your foot when the joint is red and swollen
  • surgery is the last option when conservative methods have failed
