Athlete’s foot

Athlete's foot (Tinea Pedis) is a common foot problem caused by fungus. It important to treat athletes foot when it is first diagnosed so that it does not spread to the other foot or into the toe nails. Fungal toe nails can take up to a year to treat which makes them a nuisance.

SymptomsTreatment
  • cracked, flaking, peeling skin between the toes
  • the arch and/or bottom of your foot can also be affected
  • red and itchy
  • blisters oozing or custing
  • over the counter powders or creams can help with the infection continuing usually for 1-2 weeks after the infection has cleared.
  • Lamasil or cream containing clotrimazole will treat the infection
  • if the infection persists seek medical advice as long-term treatment may be an option

Diagnosis

A skin scraping can be taken by a podiatrist or doctor to be analysed by a lab to confirm the type of infection.

Prevention

  • keep your feet clean and dry between your toes especially
  • wash your feet with soap and water
  • wear clean, cotton socks and wash your shoes often

Emergency

Always seek emergency help if your foot is very painful to touch, red, hot or swollen. If there is a pus discharge, red streaks tracking up the leg or you have diabetes and have the symptoms of athlete's foot.
