Corns

Corns are a concentrated build up of skin (hyperkeratoses), this occurs when the surface layer of the skin responses to repetitive trauma or pressure. They form on the skin surface where the bone is most prominent and it rubs against other bones or against the inside of the shoe. They are triangular shaped in a sense that the flat end is on the surface of the skin and the centre is a point and causes pain to the patient.

Callus is a thickening of skin when there is general pressure on the foot due to walking etc.

SymptomsPrevention
  • pain on direct pressure on the corn
  • swelling or discomfort around the corn
  • pain when wearing tight shoes
  • avoid tight fitting shoes
  • buy shoes with a wide/deep toe box
  • avoid tightly fitting tights or socks

Podiatrist can help by:

  • debride the corn or callus giving temporary relief to the patient
  • give various pads and devices to the toes
  • recommend shoes for the client
